Earth Day

Join Us - Bring your bird(s)

Friday 4/22/05

As our small part in the 35th annual Earthday celebration, the GPC was invited to Hardin Middle School in St. Charles.  There were several animal-related organizations present, displaying their "wares."  These included:

  • Gateway Parrot Club

  • St. Charles Parrot Rescue

  • "Dr. Doug," (Pernikoff) from Clarkson-Wilson Veterinary Clinic

  • St. Louis Herpetological Society

  • St. Louis Turtle and Tortoise Society

  • St. Louis House Rabbit Society

(sorry, I'm not absolutely sure about the names of the last two, but you get the idea...)

If the goal was to have an interesting array of animals to highlight diversity in the world, I would say it was a success.  There were exotic birds, of course, snakes, lizards, spiders, turtles, tortoises (do you know the difference?) and a house rabbit.  Did you know that rabbits can be litterbox trained and make good house pets?

The children, parents and faculty were interested and thanked everyone for their participation.  The note, below, is from Brian Peck, the coordinator.  We look forward to next year...

The children enjoyed the "hands on" experience with all the animals...
