World Bird Sanctuary

The World Bird Sanctuary is located in St. Louis County, Missouri.

The World Bird Sanctuary’s mission is to preserve the earth’s biological diversity and to secure the future of threatened bird species in their natural environments. We work to fulfill that mission through education, captive breeding, field studies and rehabilitation.

Founded in 1977, by Walter Crawford, as the Raptor Rehabilitation & Propagation Project, the early focus was on birds of prey.  (All parrot people cringe)  Over time their mission became broader and the name changed to reflect the reality.  Since 1989, WBS has been involved with the preservation of the Thick-billed, or Snow Parrot.  Nearly extinct in the wild, this is the only remaining parrot indigenous to North America.  Read the details of the program to sustain the species at WBS in an article by Paul Haskell.
